Can the 2020 Audi RS4 Still Compete in 2026?

The Audi RS4 has long been regarded as one of the most complete performance estate cars on the market. Combining everyday practicality with serious performance, it has built a loyal following among enthusiasts who want sports car pace without sacrificing comfort or usability. Six years on from its launch, the 2020 Audi RS4 remains a highly desirable car, but the performance car market has evolved rapidly. With electrification, hybrid powertrains, and increasingly powerful rivals entering the segment. We ask, can the RS4 still hold its own in 2026?

To answer that question, we took a closer look at the car's capabilities, explored how tuning can unlock additional performance, and analysed the results from our own development and dyno testing.

Performance That Still Impresses

At the heart of the B9 RS4 sits Audi's renowned 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine. Developed in collaboration with Porsche, this powertrain delivers a blend of responsiveness, refinement, and outright performance that continues to impress even by modern standards. From the factory, the RS4 produces 440 BHP and 600 NM of torque, sending power to all four wheels through Audi's legendary quattro all-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

These figures allow the RS4 to sprint from 0-62mph in around 4.1 seconds, making it genuinely quick for a vehicle capable of carrying five passengers and a sizeable amount of luggage. The car's broad torque curve means performance is available throughout the rev range, while the sophisticated chassis provides confidence-inspiring handling in all weather conditions.

One of the RS4's greatest strengths has always been its versatility. Unlike many high-performance vehicles that excel in only one environment, the Audi can comfortably tackle motorway journeys, daily commutes, and spirited track days without compromise. The combination of premium interior quality, advanced technology, and practical estate bodywork ensures that it remains relevant even as newer performance models enter the market.

However, with competitors now regularly producing well over 500 horsepower with torque figures previously reserved for supercars, the stock RS4 faces a much tougher challenge than it did in 2020. This is where intelligent performance tuning can make a significant difference.

Unlocking Additional Performance with TDI Tuning

At TDI Tuning, we specialise in developing plug-and-play tuning solutions that deliver measurable performance gains while maintaining the drivability and reliability that owners expect from their vehicles. Our tuning systems are designed to work alongside the vehicle's existing engine management system, optimising performance without requiring permanent modifications or software changes.

For the 2020 Audi RS4, our tuning system integrates seamlessly with the vehicle using a bespoke wiring harness developed specifically for the engine. Installation is straightforward, requiring no cutting, splicing, or permanent alterations to the vehicle. Once fitted, the system communicates with key engine sensors, allowing us to optimise engine parameters and unlock additional power and torque throughout the rev range.

Every tuning system we develop undergoes extensive research, testing, and calibration. Rather than pursuing headline figures alone, our focus is on delivering a balanced driving experience that improves acceleration, overtaking performance, and overall responsiveness. The result is a vehicle that feels significantly more capable in real-world driving conditions while retaining the refinement expected from a premium performance Audi.

An additional benefit of our tuning systems is their flexibility. Drivers can typically install or remove the system as required, making it an attractive option for owners who want enhanced performance without committing to permanent engine modifications. This approach has made our products particularly popular among performance car owners looking to tune their vehicles without risk.

Dyno Testing.. What the Numbers Revealed

To fully understand the potential of the B9 RS4, we booked a dyno session to really get into the nitty-gritty and unlock the most performance. Dyno testing allows us to accurately measure power and torque output before and after tuning while ensuring our calibrations deliver consistent and repeatable results.

The first stage of testing involved establishing a baseline figure for the vehicle in standard factory specification. Once a reliable baseline had been established, our tuning system was then activated, and the full power runs commenced.

Immediately, we observed noticeable improvements. Rather than simply increasing peak output, our CRTD4 tuning system delivered gains across a wide portion of the rev range, resulting in stronger acceleration and improved mid-range performance. As well as a strong boost in low and midrange torque.

The standard vehicle produced just over 430 BHP and a touch under 600 NM of torque during baseline testing.

Following installation of the TDI Tuning system, the performance increased to around 500 BHP and over 660 NM of torque.

Throughout testing, we monitored key operating parameters to ensure performance gains were achieved responsibly. Consistency across multiple dyno runs confirmed the calibration's effectiveness and demonstrated the RS4 platform's capability when paired with a professionally developed tuning solution.

Can the RS4 Still Hold Its Own in 2026?

It’s clear to see that comparing the dyno figures before and after, the Audi RS4 remains an incredibly capable performance car. While newer competitors may offer larger power figures on paper, the RS4's combination of performance, practicality, build quality, and all-weather usability continues to make it one of the most well-rounded options in its class.

The underlying engineering of the vehicle has aged remarkably well. The twin-turbocharged V6 remains responsive and powerful, the quattro system continues to provide exceptional traction, and the chassis still inspires confidence on both road and track. These strengths form a solid foundation that allows the vehicle to remain competitive despite the rapid pace of automotive development. Combined with a performance exhaust system to increase the flow, you may see even better numbers.

When enhanced with a TDI Tuning system, the RS4 gains an additional layer of performance that helps bridge the gap between newer rivals and modern expectations. Whilst the RS4 may look outdated compared to the new boxy styling of modern cars, its performance prowess is still a competitive output, ready to keep up with today’s competitors.

For drivers seeking a practical performance vehicle that can comfortably serve as both a daily driver and a weekend toy, the RS4 continues to offer a compelling package.

Conclusion

So, can the 2020 Audi RS4 still compete in 2026? The answer is a resounding yes.

While the performance car market has become more competitive than ever, the RS4's blend of power, practicality, refinement, and usability ensures it remains a formidable contender. Its twin-turbocharged V6 engine still delivers impressive performance, and when paired with a professionally developed TDI Tuning system, it gains the extra edge needed to challenge many newer rivals. Six years after its launch, the RS4 remains proof that great engineering stands the test of time, and for enthusiasts looking for a fast, versatile, and rewarding vehicle, it continues to be one of the strongest options available.
