Every month at TDI-Tuning we pick a stand-out car to feature in our Car Of The Month tuning article. We have featured hundreds of unique cars, and even a small selection of supercars. So what’s next? Something from Ferrari? Maybe a Buggati Chiron? Not quite, It’s a Hyundai I30N. We were thrilled to have one of these awesome hot hatches to work on this month. Jumping into the deep end, Hyundai took a chance entering the hot hatch environment, but we think it’s paid off. Find out why we think this car is a solid hot hatch, and a great car to tune.
When you think of a hot hatch you would be forgiven if you thought of a VW Golf GTI. Did you? We think so anyway. It is the veteran, the go-to car if you want something that can be ragged about or used for doing the weekly shop. When this Hyundai I30N surfaced it was obviously going to be compared to the likes of a Golf GTI. So how does it stack up? A quick look at the power figures reveal that Hyundai are not messing about, 271 BHP and 435 NM as standard! Huge figures to put through the front wheels. In such a diluted market of hot hatches this Hyundai isn’t just getting onto the podium for the best three, we think it is a huge contender for one of the best you can buy today!
First and foremost, it needs to be said that Hyundai have really gone all out with this I30N. Manufacturers know that the majority of the sales they generate are not through the hot hatch segment. That is reserved for the saloons and SUV sections. So, Hyundai haven’t manufactured these to majorly increase sales figures and profits – they have released it for fun! You can really tell, it doesn’t hold anything back when driving it, the 2.0 turbocharged engine feels as if it’s giving everything it’s got! With most things in life there is always room for improvement. But this car hits all the right notes, the handling, the noise, everything! The exhaust noises were a highlight for us, pops and bangs galore. It also sounds great even when you take the engine into high revs.
Hyundai use their own engine in the I30N. It uses a 6 speed gearbox delivering all the power through the front wheels. The limited slip diff fitted on this car means the handling is epic. It its 8mm lower than the normal I30 and boasts better suspension and a fancy bodykit. We think it looks wicked! Although looks can often be deceiving, the Hyundai is as good as it looks. A few of the interior plastics feel slightly cheap, and the cabin space doesn’t really compete with the high-end hatches. We're overlooking this for now though as the mechanical assets this car features make up for the lack of interior class. The exhaust sounds tremendous, the suspension does a brilliant job of helping the car corner nice and flat. The Hyundai comes in much cheaper than the majority of its rivals, and it’s certainly unique. We loved having the opportunity to get that extra bit of power out of a great engine.
