Before we address what is holding the new Audi RS4 back, let us compare it to the previous model (Model B9). The comparison begins with a similarity, it's got the same 2.9 Litre twin turbo V6. Needless to say, it's still Audi Quattro. The new Audi RS4 keeps the same 8-speed automatic gear box as well. The similarities don't stop there, the styling is very similar, with a few different vents now on show. Now on to the most important topic, power. The new one has more power doesn't it? It has to? Well, no, it doesn't. In fact, it has exactly the same amount of power. Audi have stated that it has a "Broader torque curve" meaning more power is available throughout the rev range. In theory. What’s holding back the new RS4?

The new Audi RS4 now comes with a petrol particulate filter (PPF). Climate change activist, congratulations, this gas guzzling 2.9 Litre beast chucks out less emissions than the B9 version. Although it may be a win for environmentalists, it's not a win for petrol heads. This filter restricts the performance of the car. The PPF built into the catalytic converter restricts the airflow. This means performance takes a hit, even though Audi state it doesn't! Various third-party tests have concluded that the 0-60 times are in fact, slower. It almost doesn't seem natural to put "slower" and "Audi RS4" in the same sentence. But it is! We definitely aren't saying it isn't a great car, and it still might be a better version of it than the B9 Audi RS4. The new one has an improved cockpit, with a swanky new infotainment system. Massaging seats as standard, and a new, futuristic rev gauge. How can you have the best of both worlds in this situation? Is there a way to have the new model, without that pesky PPF? Some tuning companies may be able to offer this. It would involve removing the filter and remapping the engine, so it knew it was no longer there. This will invalidate your warranty straight away.
