The Ford Puma 1.0 MHEV 155. Not the conventional Puma that unveiled in 1997. But the brand-new Ford Puma compact crossover. It has developed mixed opinions within the industry. Should Ford have used the iconic name in a car that doesn't resemble the original? We think it's a brilliant car, and the name fits perfectly. Find out why this Ford Puma is a fantastic compact car.
Comparing the old and the new: The Ford Puma
The 1997 version of the Ford Puma was more of a sports compact car as opposed to a compact crossover. This meant it had fantastic handling, a low-down centre of gravity, and a selection of punchy engines available. The new Ford Puma, is not a sports compact car. It's a practical compact crossover. So, how do you think it handles? It is considerably taller than it's predecessor, but, it handles like a dream. Ford chassis have always been ahead of the game, creating an excellent base for incredible handling. This Puma is no different. It sticks to the road, there is minimal body roll. On longer journeys it's also comfortable and economical. The choice of engines is also good. Fords flagship 1.0 EcoBoost 125 BHP engine is available with the mild-hybrid boost. Alongside that engine, there is a more powerful 1.0 153 BHP engine (The one pictured). And, for anyone looking for outright speed, there is the 1.5 engine hand-picked from the new generation Fiesta ST with 197 BHP. So, the engine choice is vast, the handling is fantastic, it's practical, and its fuel efficient. The new Ford Puma is an excellent choice in car.
What is the Ford Puma like to drive?
Ford have always got the nail on the head when it comes to handling and chassis development. They are an inexpensive way to experience top notch handling. The Ford Puma is no different. It has the same underpinnings as the Ford Fiesta, widely known as one of the best (cheap) handling cars in the UK. The engine is best described as, nippy. This Ford Puma is in it’s element when driving around town and covering light motorway miles. The mild hybrid system is exactly what it says on the tin, mild. You wont notice it kicking in as it's so subtle, but the power is there when you plant your foot down. Several of our customers have noted that you will feel the regenerative braking quite a lot in Eco mode. You can feel the car holding itself back and recharging it's small battery pack. The most exciting driving mode is the Sport mode. Harnessing the electric and petrol driven power to give the Puma the most performance avaliable. This mode also offers less regenerative braking, so it is less intrusive to drive. What if there isn't enough power, even in sport mode? Well, there is a model up from this one. The Ford Puma 1.5 litre ST. But, there is a large drawback to purchasing this model over the mild hybrid.
Have all the power but without the expensive price tag
We just mentioned the Ford Puma ST, with the same engine as the Fiesta ST. It's a very good engine and it returns around 35 MPG (With real life road conditions and driving styles). The comparative 1.0 155 EcoBoost engine returns up to 45 MPG. There is also a huge price difference in the two. The 1.0 mild hybrid engines start from £22,995. The Ford Puma ST? It's £28,510. More than £5000 more expensive. What if there was a way to have similar power outputs to the ST, without having to spend out an extra £5000? Believe it or not, there is a very easy way to accomplish just that. A TDI-Tuning Box. Our custom programmed TDI-Tuning Box boosts power for the Ford Puma 153 to 194 BHP! That's only 3 BHP shy of the ST version. Save yourself £5000 on the list price, and a considerable amount of fuel per year, use a chip tuning box instead.
Why a TDI-Tuning Box is the best tune for a Ford Puma
What if you don't care about saving all that money with a TDI-Tuning Box? Well, there are more reasons than money to purchase one of our custom programmed chip tunes. This Ford Puma MHEV model is coming up to being 3 years old. That means it's still well within your manufacturers warranty. A warranty that would remain intact if you choose to install a TDI-Tuning Box. As our tuning files are stored on a box, instead of the ECU, once the tuning box is removed, it leaves no trace. Take the tuning box out, the car goes back to standard. Once you have taken the car back to standard for whatever reason, the tuning box that you take off can be reprogrammed for another vehicle. Our tuning box comes with a 5-year warranty as well, so you can have complete peace of mind when changing cars. These are just some of the reasons to chip tune your car.
